I’m trying to pin down whether DDB’s 1959 Think Small was the first U.S. car ad to make negative space the hero — tiny car, Futura body, ocean of margin. Got an earlier example that treats layout like that? I’m building a deck and want to credit the true genesis of white-space-as-concept, not just the popular breakthrough.
I’d start with Duke’s Ad*Access (Making sure you're not a bot!) and filter autos 1950–58; look for Cadillac/Packard placements in Esquire/New Yorker that float a small illustration in lots of margin — proto “white-space-as-concept” even if not as pure as DDB. If you’re counting U.S.-run imports, early Mercedes/Jaguar placements in The New Yorker are even airier — are you limiting to U.S. makes? White space didn’t start in ’59; it just got its driver’s license.
